LALMANIRHAT, Jan 7, 2025 (BSS) – Around 36 brick kilns are being operated  without clearance certificate from the Department of Environment (DoE) in Lalmonirhat district.

Sources said a total of 55 brick kilns are operating in the district. Of them, 19 brick kilns are authorized while the remaining 36 are being run illegally.

Talking to BSS, deputy commissioner of the district HM Rakib Haider said the administration will soon conduct mobile courts against soil traders.

“We have instructed upazila administration for taking necessary measures against the owners of unauthorized brick kilns,” he added.

According to local sources, owners of unauthorized brick kilns have been doing business for years filing separate cases (writ petition).

Five brickfields out of eight under Sadar upazila, 10 out of 14 at Adittyamari upazila, eight out of 12 at Kaliganj upazila, 12 out of 17 at Hatibandha upazila and one out of four at Patgram upazila are being operated without approval of the DoE, they said.

“Owners of brickfields are making bricks on arable land without any approval of the DoE,” Haider Ali, a local farmer alleged to BSS here today.
