RANGPUR, May 14, 2025 (BSS) - The exceptional initiative of Pirgachha Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Nazmul Haque Sumon to install 1,000 bird nests in trees at government expense has attracted the attention of nature lovers.

Anyone can see the sky-high trees in the Pirgachha upazila parishad premises in Rangpur district have suddenly become the new home for hundreds of native birds as small nests made of clay are being placed in the trees.

Calling for the return of birds, the nature-loving UNO started the unique project of installing 1,000 nests for birds.

Local nature-loving people are terming the unique initiative not just a mere project, but a movement that is synonymous with a silent call to bring back nature and provide safe shelter to birds for a balanced ecosystem.

UNO Md Nazmul Haque Sumon by himself supervised the ongoing activities of installing bird nests in trees in the upazila town.

Behind such an exceptional government-funded project is a clear message from the UNO on environmental awareness at a time when the adverse impacts of climate change are severely damaging nature and causing the extinction of native birds.

Official sources told BSS that as many as 1,000 clay-made bird nests will be installed on tree branches at various intersections of Pirgachha Sadar union with a cost of Taka two- lakh allocated under the annual development program (ADP) and revenue sector during the 2024-2025 FY.

UNO MD Nazmul Haque Sumon formally inaugurated the bird nest installation project in a simple ceremony on Tuesday at the Pirgachha upazila parishad premises.

Among other, Pirgachha Upazila Engineer Asaduzzaman Jemi, Upazila Livestock Officer Dr Ekramul Haque Mondal, Upazila Public Health Engineer Sanwar Morshed, Sub-assistant Engineer Farida Yasmin Sheela, Officer-in-Charge (OC-Investigation) of Pirgachha police station Nahid Hossain, and political leaders were present at the ceremony.

Regarding the idea behind the initiative, Nazmul said that birds must be saved first to preserve nature. Habitat crisis of birds is becoming more and more apparent day by day.

"We want the birds to think of these nests as their sanctuary, to return to our nature. This project is not just about building a nest in the mud, but rather it is a dream of bringing nature back to the wings of small birds," he said.

"The sound of bird wings may soon increase in the sky of Pirgachha upazila, where the touch of life will return to the bird nests in the mud," he hoped.

Talking to BSS, local school students Arman and Mohibur and college students Aklima and Reshma highly appreciated the initiative taken by the UNO to install 1,000 bird nests on tree branches as a safe abode for birds in the Pirgachha Sadar union area.

"Nature will wear a pleasant look when a large number of native birds will start to live in the bird nests and their chirping sounds and they will fly in the air with their magical wings," said Aklima.

Environmental activist Shamsur Rahman Sumon, also a student of Begum Rokeya University, said, "When hundreds of small native birds will start living in these bird houses, the balance of the ecosystem will be restored and nature will regain its beauty."
