World No Tobacco Day observed in Narsingdi

NARSINGDI, May 31, 2025 (BSS) - World No Tobacco Day was observed today in Narsingdi with due significance, aiming to raise awareness about the consequences of tobacco consumption and encouraging people to quit smoking.

The event, organized by the Shibpur Upazila Administration, began at 11am with a rally that started in front of the upazila parishad office. 

Participants marched through key roads of the area and returned to the starting point, drawing attention to the urgent need for tobacco control.

Following the rally, a discussion meeting was held at the upazila parishad conference room, presided over by Shibpur Assistant Commissioner (Land), Md. Abdur Rahim.

Former General Secretary of the District BNP Alhaj Tofazzal Hossain, President of the Upazila BNP and valiant freedom fighter Abul Haris Rikabdar, Ameer of Upazila Jamaat-e-Islami Mustafizur Rahman Kawsar, Medical Officer of Shibpur Upazila Health Complex Dr. Mahbub Alam and Head Teacher of Shibpur Government Pilot Model High School Nur Uddin Md. Alamgir, among others, attended the event.

Speakers at the event stressed the importance of united efforts from all segments of society to combat the health hazards posed by tobacco. They urged both government bodies and civil society organizations to play proactive roles in enforcing anti-tobacco policies and promoting a smoke-free environment.

World No Tobacco Day, observed globally on May 31, aims to highlight the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and advocate for effective measures to reduce its use.
