RANGPUR, July 1, 2025 (BSS) - A Rangpur court has ordered five individuals, including four Awami League (AL) leaders and activists, to be shown as arrested in the murder case of Manik Mia, an auto-rickshaw driver who was killed during 2024 July uprising.
Judge R Q M Julkarnain of the Rangpur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (Cognizance) Court passed the order on Monday, following a petition submitted by Md Shah Alam Sarder, officer-in-charge of Tajhat Police Station and the investigating officer in the case.
The five accused are Tushar Kanti Mondal, former general secretary of Rangpur Metropolitan AL, Abdul Quader Zilani, organizing secretary of AL's Tajhat Thana unit, Shamim Hasan, a former banned Chhatra League leader and now Jubo League leader, Harun Or Rashid, a former Rangpur city councilor and Rafiul Hasan Russell, an official from the Proctor Office of Begum Rokeya University.
According to police, all five are already in Rangpur Central Jail in connection with other cases.
Manik Mia was shot dead by police at the Modern Mour intersection in Rangpur city on July 18, 2024, during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement. In the aftermath, his mother, Noorjahan Begum, filed a murder case naming 119 people as accused. The list includes former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, two former ministers, three former MPs, seven police officers, three city councilors, and senior leaders of the Rangpur Metropolitan AL and its affiliated organizations.
