Bodies of two students recovered after 22 hours of boat capsize

KISHOREGANJ, July 2, 2025 (BSS) - The bodies of two madrasa students, who went missing after a boat capsized in the Brahmaputra River in Gafargaon upazila in Mymensingh, were recovered this morning from the river in Pakundia upazila of the district after 22 hours.

The deceased were identified as Abir, 6, son of Habib Mia, and Zubayed, 6, son of Mumtaz Uddin, both residents of Charalgi area under Pakundia upazila in the district. They were first-grade students of a local Dakhil Madrasa.

Family members recovered the bodies from the Banshia area of Tangab union under Pakundia upazila of the district around 7:00 am today, police said.

According to eyewitnesses and local sources, nine students boarded a small boat around 9:30 am on Tuesday to cross the Brahmaputra River from Charalgi area to attend their madrasa. The boat capsized near Datta Bazar in Gafargaon upazila before reaching the other side.

Six students managed to swim ashore, while three others went missing. Later on Tuesday afternoon, a Fire Service diving team recovered the body of one of the missing students, Shapla Akter, 15.

The remaining two bodies were found this morning, approximately two kilometers downstream from the site of the incident.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gafargaon Police Station Ferdous Alam confirmed the recovery.
