DHAKA, July 2, 2025 (BSS) - The much-discussed Nasirpur Canal, the 'lifeline' of millions of people in 20 villages flowing over an area of ??about ten kilometers, was officially recovered and freed from encroachers by the upazila administration today.
In the festive presence of thousands of people, including men and women of the area, all obstacles were removed from the canal under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner (land), and members of the security forces.
Signboards were put up at various places on an area of ??about 205 bighas. People regained their full rights over the canal after three decades and became delighted with joy of fishing.
As a result of the opening of the canal, those whose food resources and livelihood depend on the canal are now experiencing joy in their homes.
Sweets are being distributed in villages, neighborhoods, homes, and markets. There is excitement on both sides of the canal to get life back.
Today was a different day, a day of joy, celebration, and happiness, for the people of Taltala, Chinamla, Goalbathan, Pratapkathi, Khola, Kazimusha, Rezakpur, Kashimnagar, Kanaidanga, Kapilmuni, Haridhali, Salua, Srirampur, Hauli, Nasirpur, Ramnagar, Mahmudkathi.
The demands they have made for a long time, through sacrifice, hardship, oppression, fear, and discrimination have been fulfilled.
On June 30, the announcement was made to open the Nasirpur Canal in Paikgachha in the last meeting of the Jalmahal Lease Committee at the Land Ministry of Khulna district.
Chairman of the board of directors of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Anwar Aldin, a well-known journalist and philanthropist of Paikgachha-Koira area, who is determined to implement the vision of area’s development, has relentlessly played a major role in opening the Nasirpur Canal.
For a long time, millions of ordinary fishermen, farmers, enclosure farmers and the general public in the vast area adjacent to the canal have been living a besieged and helpless life.
Some canal grabbers, in the name of political parties, have grasped mountains of illegal money by spreading fear and depriving the common people through fraudulence.
Just as the common people of the village cannot water their crops from these water bodies, they cannot use this water for necessary purposes. These canal grabbers have been destroying the enclosures of those who earn their living by encircling fish along the canal.
Many locals have been victims of the oppression of canal grabbers. They have blocked the flow of water with bamboo fences, thick mesh nets and nets in places and have almost filled the canal.
They are strangling the life and abundance of the canal. For this reason, millions of suffering people from villages have been demanding the opening of the Nasirpur Canal for a long time. The scene of a war has been created at various times due to the occupation and counter-occupation of the canal by two groups of political parties. Ordinary fishermen have been beaten and evicted there.
In the past, numerous processions, rallies, human chains and press conferences have not been resolved.
Finally, after the Khulna Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam implemented this decision to rescue and open the canal with the tireless efforts of the general fishermen, farmers and common people on the banks of the canal, they congratulated him and held a joyous procession. Sweets were distributed.
Today around 12 noon, Upazila Assistant Commissioner (land) Md. Iftekharul Islam Shamim, Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Saikat Mallik, Upazila Agriculture Officer Krishibid Ekramul Hossain, army officers, police members installed a signboard declaring the illegal occupation of the canal free.
They started the work of removing illegal nets in the canal. The nets given at seven places in the canal are being opened in stages to ensure the flow of water.
Local leaders said that the former chairman of Kapilmuni Union Parishad, Shahadat Hossain Dablu, had been illegally occupying the land for a long time, sometimes with a lease and sometimes without a lease, and the encroachers had been cultivating various species of fish, including saltwater shrimp, in pieces with nets.
Before the end of the Awami League rule, the Awami League people were busy with encroachment and looting. The common people have been deprived.
