BOGURA, July 3, 2025 (BSS) - The Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested a man for embezzling money by claiming to be a cousin of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and promising party positions in exchange for cash.

The accused has been identified as Shamim Rahman, 33, son of the late Lil Miah of Nishindara Karbala Mohalla in Bogura city.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Hossain Muhammad Raihan disclosed the matter at a press briefing held at the DB office in Bogura today.

Acting on a tip-off, law enforcers detained him from the Matir Masjid area of Sector 4 under Uttara Purba Police Station in Dhaka in the early hours of today.

According to police, accused Shamim had long been deceiving BNP leaders and activists by falsely introducing himself as a barrister and claiming to have close ties to the party's top leadership.

Police launched the investigation following a written complaint filed by Harun-ur Rashid at the Bogura Sadar Police Station on the night of July 2.
