‘Expatriates' remittances turn country's fragile economy around’

RANGPUR, July 3, 2025 (BSS) – Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Md Shahidul Islam in a seminar today said that remittances sent by expatriate Bangladeshis play an important role in increasing foreign exchange reserves.
 
“After the mass uprising of 2024, the country's fragile economy has turned around through remittances sent by expatriates. The nation is grateful to them for this contribution of expatriates in the reconstruction of the country,” he said. 
 
He said this as the chief guest at a programme organized for distributing scholarship and disability allowance cheques among the meritorious children of expatriate workers at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room in the city on Thursday afternoon.
 
The seminar cum cheque distribution function- 2025 was arranged under the ‘Recovery and advancement of informal sector employment: Reintegration of returning migrants project’ at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room.
 
The district administration and Rangpur Expatriate Welfare Center jointly organised the event under the project being implemented by the Wage Earners Welfare Board of the Ministry of Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment. 
 
Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal presided over the function participated by government officials, meritorious students and children of expatriate workers, guardians and journalists.
 
The chief guest said to the children of the expatriates, that their parents work tirelessly for their beautiful future. 
 
“Only if you (children of the expatriates) can establish yourself in the society, hardship of your parents will become meaningful,” he said.
 
The Deputy Commissioner said that many expatriates are struggling in their life abroad to keep their families well. 
 
“Every expatriate parent dreams of better future for their children. It is the responsibility of their children to realize those dreams,” he said. 
 
At the event, 20 meritorious children of expatriate workers were given cheques of scholarships and 10 disabled children were given cheques of disability allowances. The total value of the cheques was Taka 7,15,500.
