KHULNA, July 4, 2025 (BSS) – Police recovered the hanging body of a woman from a room at the Western Inn, a posh (luxury) hotel, in Khulna city this afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Shanta Islam, 42, daughter of Abdul Khalek of Teligati village in Bagerhat. She had been working as a domestic help in different areas of Dhaka, Howlader Sanwar Hussain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khulna Sadar police station confirmed.

OC said she arrived in Khulna from Dhaka on Thursday and checked into room 208 on the third floor of the hotel identifying herself as Asma.

She had breakfast this morning but did not respond when hotel staff knocked the door to clean the room around 12:30 pm.

Later, at 4:20 pm, the hotel authorities informed the police. Law enforcement, including female officers, broke into the room and found Shanta hanging with a scarf.

In her belongings, a birth certificate of a domestic help supply company in Dhaka was found, confirming her identity.

She had reportedly stayed at other hotels using false names and left without paying, OC said, adding that she at last worked in a residence of Murshida before leaving for Khulna.

It might be a suicidal incident, OC suspected, adding that investigation has already begin to unearth the causes behind the incident.
