LALMONIRHAT, Aug 13, 2025 (BSS) - Due to continuous rains and upstream hill slopes, the water of Teesta river has crossed the danger level flooding many low-lying areas of Aditmari, Kaliganj, Hatibandha, Sadar and Patgram upazilas of the district.
Especially the low-lying areas on the left bank of Teesta have been submerged in water for the third time. Roads, ghats, residential areas, cropland, rural roads and educational institutions of more than hundreds of villages have been submerged.
According to the Water Development Board, at 12 noon today, the water of Teesta is flowing four centimeters more than the danger level (current water level 52.19 meters, danger level 52.15 meters).
The previous day [Tuesday afternoon], the water flow was one centimeter above the danger level.
The continuous rains and the rising water level in the past few days have continued to increase the water level of the river.
New areas includes Dahagram, Gaddimari, Doani, Chhayani, Saniajan, Singamari, Sindurna, Haldibari and Dauabari in Patgram, Botmari, Shailmari, Nohali in Kaliganj, Mahishkhocha, Govardhan, Kalmati, Bahadurpara and Palashi in Aditmari, and vast areas of Folimari, Khuniagach, Kulaghat, Mogalhat, Rajpur and Gokunda unions in Sadar upazila have been flooded.
People's suffering has reached its peak as the rising water level in the upstream has continued to rise.
Abdul Halim of Mahishkhocha union said, "It rained intermittently yesterday and the day after yesterday. Then the water started rising. I am in trouble with my cows and goats."
Another flood victim Majlum Hossain said, "Water has been entering slowly all night. Cooking has stopped and children are not even able to go to school. No one is coming to see."
Hamidur Rahman, a farmer from Dauabari, said, "Water has entered the low-lying areas. We are in trouble with our cropland and livestock. We need urgent help from the administration."
Shunil Kumar, executive engineer of the Water Development Board, said, "Everyone has been asked to be alert due to the fear of flooding in the low-lying areas due to the increase in water. The situation and the risky embankments are being monitored around the clock."
Tahidul Islam, deputy assistant engineer of Dalia Division, said, "The water may rise further by the evening. A total of 44 water gates of Teesta Barrage have been opened to control the situation."
