SHERPUR, Aug 21, 2025 (BSS) – Farmers in the district are experiencing a bumper jute production this year as the jute cultivation in the district has gone beyond the target because of higher prices.
The jute cultivation target during this year was 1,894 hectares of land while the jute has been cultivated on 1,911 hectares of land, according to the Sherpur district Agricultural Extension Services.
The jute production is expected to reach over 6,020 tonnes. In the district land area for jute cultivation has been increased and the average jute production in per hectare has also increased and as a result the jute cultivation has crossed the target in the district.
Last year, the jute was cultivated on 1,894 hectares of land but during this year jute has been cultivated on 1, 911 hectares. Nearly 7,000 farmers got a kg of jute seed and 12 kg chemical fertilizer under the agricultural incentive programme.
The jute harvest of 1,700 hectares of land has already been over –where the average jute yield was 10-12 maund in per bigha.
The jute cultivation costs Taka 10,000-12,000 for per bigha while the profit is expected to be Tk 14,000 to Tk 15,000 excluding the production cost, said the farmers.
Even the additional income is coming from the selling of jute stalk ---as a bundle of jute stalk is being sold at Taka 50-60.
“The government should take steps so that none can manipulate the existing jute price through syndicate,” said Jamal Uddin, a farmer of Daripara village of Lasmanpur union under Sherpur Sadar upazila.
Otherwise, the farmers will be deprived from the fair price, he added.
“I have cultivated jute on three bighas of land as the rainfall was significant that has helped jute growers to decompose jute easily,” said another farmer Akram Hossain of same area, adding, “We are getting 12 maund of jute in every bigha and the price is comparatively better.”
The farmers in the district are showing more interest to grow jute due mainly to additional jute price … they are satisfied with the market price of the fibre, said Deputy Director of the district agricultural extension department Mohammad Shakawat Hossain.
