GAZIPUR, Sept 4, 2025 (BSS)- Two children drowned after falling into an abandoned pond behind their home while playing in Gazipur on Wednesday afternoon, casting a pall of grief over the area.

The incident was taken place at 5.30pm at Ambagh Pashimpara area under Konabari in the Gazipur city.

The deceased are identified as Yanur, 2, son of Azad, hailed from Jamalpur district and Habib, 2, son of Amir Hossain, of Tangail district. The families of both children had been living in a rented house at Afsar Hazi's residence in Ambagh Pashimpara area, said Sub-Inspector (SI) Rafiqul Islam of Konabari Police Station.

According to locals, the children accidentally fell into an abandoned pond near their house while playing on the bank of it around 5:30 pm and drowned. 

Later, family members and neighbors found their bodies floating into the water body and rushed them to a nearby hospital where the on-duty doctor declared them dead.

The pond had reportedly been abandoned for a long time. The families took the bodies to their ancestral homes later that night.
