DHAKA, Sept 5, 2025 (BSS) - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a Jubo League leader in a murder case linked to the July Uprising from the capital's Shantinagar area.
The arrested has been identified as Md Sumon (37), vice-president of ward no. 13 of the Jubo League.
A team of the Dhaka Metro South Unit of the CID arrested Sumon from Shantinagar Bazar area under Paltan Police Station on Thursday.
Special Superintendent of Police (Media), CID, Dhaka, Jasim Uddin Khan confirmed the arrest.
Sumon hailed from Jafrabad village in Madaripur district. He was currently staying in a rented house in the capital's Chamelibag area.
Investigation revealed that on July 18, 2024, on the first day of the shutdown program announced by the anti-discrimination student movement, students of various educational institutions in Dhaka participated in peaceful processions and rallies.
At that time, Sumon attacked the protesting students and public in collusion with local Awami League leaders.
In the attack, Liza Akhter, a domestic worker staying at Kanifa Tower in Shantinagar area of Ramna, was seriously injured by bullets.
Later, she died on 22 July 2024 while undergoing treatment at Popular Hospital.
A murder case was lodged in this connection.
During the initial interrogation, Suman admitted that he was directly involved in the murder and the repressive attack on the student movement.
To ensure a fair investigation of the case and to identify and arrest other accused and planners involved in the incident, the CID demanded remand for his interrogation after producing him before the court.
