KHULNA, Sept 23, 2025 (BSS) - A Khulna court today granted bail to Shahajadi Begum and her mother, Nargis Begum, who were arrested after taking a newborn boy from a local clinic in an effort "to protect Shahajadi's marriage".

Judge Md Sharif Hossain Haidar of the Khulna Metropolitan and Sessions Judge Court granted bail without any bond, considering special circumstances, said Advocate Sheikh Rafiquzzaman, lawyer of the accused.

Earlier, on September 15, police arrested Nargis and Shahajadi from a local clinic in the Rupsha area of the city.

According to hospital, police, and local sources, Shahajadi gave birth to her fifth child, a baby girl, on September 11 in the same clinic.

The family had been hoping for a son, but upon learning that Shahajadi had given birth to another daughter, her husband Sirajul reportedly abandoned her at the hospital and cut off all contact.

On September 15, a four-day-old baby boy belonging to another patient at the same clinic was abducted.

Within hours, police recovered the child from the possession of Shahajadi's mother, Nargis Begum, who admitted to stealing the baby to "save her daughter's marriage," said Khulna Sadar Thana Officer-in-charge (OC) Shafiqul Islam.

Both mother and daughter were subsequently arrested.

Md Mirza Sujan, the male baby's father, later filed a case under the Human Trafficking Act, naming Shahajadi and her mother as accused.

Earlier, on Sunday, police produced Shahajadi before the court after she was discharged from hospital care. As she had no legal representation at the time, her bail hearing could not be held.

The court then sent her to jail, where she later fell ill along with her newborn. She was shifted to Khulna Medical College Hospital for treatment. Earlier, her initial bail plea was rejected by a lower court on Monday.
