15 fishermen jailed for illegally catching hilsa in Munshiganj

MUNSHIGANJ, Oct 14 (BSS) – A mobile court today sentenced 15 fishermen to different jail terms for catching hilsa fish during the ban period.

A team led by executive magistrate Masud Parvej conducted the drive in Bejgaon, Gaudia, Dohri, Kalma and Cedar Char areas of the Padma River in Louhajang upazila and arrested the fishermen for catching hilsa during the prohibited period, said senior fisheries officer of Louhajang upazila Md. Rezaul Islam.

The mobile court sentenced each of those arrested for hilsa fishing to 7 and 10 days in prison. During the operation, 10 kg of hilsa fish and 180,000 meters of illegal current nets were seized.

The seized nets were destroyed and the hilsa fish were given to a local orphanage.
