70 fishermen jailed in Manikganj for catching Hilsa

MANIKGANJ, Oct 18, 2025 (BSS) - A total of 70 fishermen were jailed in Manikganj till today for catching mother Hilsa in violation of the government ban at various points along the Padma and Jamuna rivers.

The drives to protect mother Hilsa have been ongoing, led by the police, the Department of Fisheries, and local administration.

District Fisheries Officer (DFO) Sydur Rahman said that since the ban began on October 4, authorities seized 2.897 metric tons of mother Hilsa from different locations in Harirampur, Shibalaya, and Daulatpur upazilas.

He added that 106,950 meters of fishing nets, valued at Tk 1.37 crore were also confiscated from the rivers. Additionally, fines totaling Tk 1.73 lakh were imposed on those violating the ban.

The DFO said the seized Hilsa is being distributed among various madrasas in the district.
