SATKHIRA, Nov 20, 2025 (BSS) - The regions of Kaliganj, Shyamnagar, and Debhata in Satkhira district today celebrated their Liberation Day, which occurred on November 20, 1971, with a vibrant reunion held in honour of heroic freedom fighters.

The commemorative event, organized by the Upazila Freedom Fighter Command, today took place at the Kaliganj Upazila ground.

The reunion saw the participation of over five hundred freedom fighters.

The ceremony commenced with the hoisting of the national flag accompanied by the national anthem. This was followed by the observance of one minute of silence in honor of the eternal peace of all martyred freedom fighters.

The gathering was addressed by retired Major General and heroic freedom fighter Dr. Md. Shah Jahan as the chief guest. The event was presided over by Retired Captain M Nurul Huda, who serves as the Sub-Commander of Sector 9 and a member of the National Freedom Fighter Council.

The programme was conducted by teacher and journalist S.M. Shahidul Islam.

A central theme of the speeches was the need to uphold the dignity and genuine status of the nation's liberators.

Speakers expressed significant concern, stating that freedom fighters have not received proper respect because the official number of freedom fighters has been dramatically increased from 94,000 to 250,000 in the past 17 years.

Speakers made a strong assertion, "If there were no fake freedom fighters, genuine freedom fighters could have been gifted 'golden cots'.”

It was also noted that the politicization of the great Liberation War and the inclusion of fraudulent individuals on the list have negatively impacted 54 freedom fighter organizations across the country.

In the light of these issues, the speakers acknowledged that the current government has already initiated work to prepare a comprehensive list of genuine freedom fighters.

Furthermore, the government has taken specific initiatives to promote the welfare and uphold the dignity of these heroic individuals.
