CHATTOGRAM, Nov 20, 2025 (BSS) - Two sweet shops in the port city were fined a total of Tk 5 lakh today during mobile court drives for a series of serious food safety and hygiene violations.

The establishments Royal Bangla Sweets at Enayet Bazar intersection and Bose Brothers at Nandankanan were inspected by Assistant Commissioners (Land) and Executive Magistrates Sonia Haque and Masuma Akhter Kona.

Chattogram Safe Food Officer Mohammad Farhan Islam said Royal Bangla Sweets was found producing low-quality food items without registration, storing expired products and failing to follow mandatory labeling rules.

He said such irregularities pose grave risks to public health.

Bose Brothers was fined Tk 2 lakh under the Safe Food Act, 2013 after inspectors found the shop operating in extremely unhygienic conditions. Rats, cockroaches, flies and lizards were detected around food products, while sick workers were engaged in unregistered production of substandard items.

Officials also found violations of labeling requirements and garbage stored inside the kitchen.

Authorities said similar enforcement drives will continue to ensure food safety and protect consumers.
