Smuggled goods worth Tk 1.86 cr seized in Cumilla

CUMILLA, Jan 1, 2026 (BSS) - Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have seized illegally smuggled Indian goods worth Taka over 1.86 crore from the border area of Cumilla.

Lieutenant Colonel Mir Ali Ejaz, commander of the Cumilla Battalion (10 BGB), confirmed the matter on Thursday afternoon.

According to BGB sources, the Cumilla Battalion regularly conducts operations to prevent smuggling and curb cross-border crimes. As part of these efforts, a special task force was formed on Wednesday night under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Rafid Khan. The operation was carried out jointly by BGB and police personnel, led by the battalion's adjutant.

During the operation, the task force conducted a raid on the Chattala Express train bound for Chattogram at Rasulpur Railway Station in Adarsha Sadar Upazila around 7:30 pm. A large consignment of illegal Indian goods was recovered from the train without any claimant.

The seized items included fireworks, cosmetics, saris, basmati rice and fuchka, all of Indian origin.

Lieutenant Colonel Mir Ali Ejaz said that legal action would be taken regarding the seized goods following due process. He also added that such operations would continue in the future to prevent smuggling and maintain border security.
