NATORE, Feb 23, 2026 (BSS) - A government initiative to sell milk and eggs at subsidised prices during Ramadan has received a positive response from residents in the district.
Under the supervision of the District Livestock Office, milk is being sold at Taka 70 per litre and eggs at Taka 90 per dozen from the first day of Ramadan. The programme will continue until the 25th of Ramadan.
According to the District Livestock Office, an average of 15 litres of milk and 600 eggs are being sold daily from its premises. The initiative aims to ease the financial burden on low-income families and ensure adequate animal protein intake during the holy month.
The programme is also underway in several upazilas, including Gurdaspur, Baraigram, Singra, Lalpur and Bagatipara, through their respective Upazila Livestock Offices.
Buyers expressed satisfaction with the prices and quality. Aqib Jahan Apu said he bought three dozen eggs at Taka 90 per dozen, while market prices range from Taka 120 to Taka 135, saving him Taka 30-45 per dozen.
Another buyer, Chamiron Bewa, said she purchased one litre of milk for Taka 70 and found the quality satisfactory. However, she noted that customers are currently allowed to buy only one litre each and hoped the quantity limit would be increased.
Managing Director of Zisan Poultry Hatchery Nesar Ahmed Zisan said the hatchery supplies 600 eggs daily to the Livestock Department for the programme, adding that it is providing some relief to low-income residents.
District Livestock Officer Dr Md Selim Uddin said the subsidised sale is being conducted with the cooperation of the district's Dairy Association and local farmers to help fasting people meet their nutritional needs during Ramadan.
Officials believe the programme has already had a positive impact and expect continued public response in the coming days.
