NARAYANGANJ, March 31, 2026 (BSS) - A special cleanliness drive has been launched in Sadar upazila of Narayanganj to prevent dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases by raising public awareness and eliminating breeding grounds.
Deputy Commissioner Md Raihan Kabir inaugurated the programme at the upazila premises this afternoon.
Addressing the function, he said dengue outbreaks usually occur during and after the monsoon, adding that the government is prioritising early preparedness to protect public health.
He said potential mosquito breeding sites are being identified in advance and necessary measures taken to destroy them.
The deputy commissioner said this year's programme includes voluntary participation alongside government efforts, with volunteers from BD Clean, Scouts, local organisations and union parishads joining the campaign.
The drive has initially started in Nolkhali, Bogdumari and Obdar canals, where waste and water hyacinth are being removed and larvicide spraying is underway, he said.
He said the programme will be expanded to all seven unions of the upazila and later to other areas of the district.
The initial phase covers about 400 metres of canals, with a target to clean and re-excavate around 8 to 8.5 kilometres before the monsoon.
