BAGERHAT, March 31, 2026 (BSS) - The three-day traditional Baruni Snan and Matua Maha Mela began with religious fervour at Sridham Laxmikhali in Morelganj upazila of Bagerhat, marking the 215th birth anniversary of Harichand Thakur.

A large number of devotees from across the country and abroad joined the festival, which started on Monday morning.

Followers of the Matua faith, inspired by the principle of "service to humanity is the supreme religion," performed rituals seeking self-purification and spiritual liberation. Devotees chanted hymns and took a holy dip, believing it brings relief from suffering and divine blessings.

The festival, introduced by Gopalchand Sadhu Thakur under the guidance of Guruchand Thakur, has long been a major religious gathering of the Matua community. Sagar Sadhu Thakur is currently the fifth successor in this lineage.

As the Trayodashi Tithi began, the area echoed with the sounds of traditional musical instruments, including dhak and dhol. Devotees carrying red flags took part in kirtan before bathing in the Kamna Sagar. Organisers said the day holds special religious significance for followers.

Mahaprasad was distributed among devotees, while Sri Amitabh Thakur and Sri Subrata Thakur urged attendees to uphold religious teachings.

Law enforcement agencies and local volunteers maintained order throughout the event. Superintendent of Police Mohammad Hasan Chowdhury visited the venue today and expressed satisfaction over the peaceful atmosphere, urging all to practise their religions with mutual respect.

The festival will conclude tomorrow with final worship, prayers, holy bath and distribution of prasad.
