22 fishermen held in Chandpur for catching jatka

CHANDPUR, April 17, 2026 (BSS) - A total of 22 fishermen were detained for illegally catching jatka (juvenile hilsa) in the Meghna River during a joint drive yesterday.

Of them, 15 were sentenced to different terms of imprisonment, one was fined Tk 500, while six adolescent fishermen were released after signing bonds.

The mobile court was conducted at the Coast Guard Chandpur Station by Additional Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Md Nazmul Huda, with support from the Department of Fisheries, Bangladesh Coast Guard and River Police.

Assistant Fisheries Officer of Chandpur Sadar Upazila Md Mizanur Rahman confirmed the matter today.

"During the drive, five fishing nets and five boats were seized, and 22 fishermen were detained for catching jatka," he said.
