CHATTOGRAM, May 20, 2026 (BSS)- City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain has urged officials to be more proactive, accountable, and field-oriented to accelerate revenue collection.
In a meeting with the revenue department of the CCC in his office today, despite being the second-largest city and commercial hub, revenue collection is below its potential.
To address this issue, he called for increased responsibility and efficiency of all stakeholders.
Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain asked the officials to take quick steps to realize the outstanding bills from government agencies to enhance the financial capacity of the city corporation.
He suggested sending DO letters to relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Finance, for immediate collection of arrears. Additionally, he emphasized the need to reassess holding taxes for large commercial entities and expedite revenue collection from various sectors.
During the meeting, it was noted that potential revenue remains uncollected due to factors such as lack of tax awareness among businesses, tax evasion tendencies, and manpower shortages in the revenue department. To overcome these challenges, strategic measures were discussed, including sending DO letters for government dues, reevaluating commercial establishments, verifying taxability in specific areas, identifying major tax defaulters, addressing manpower shortages, conducting tax awareness campaigns, providing regular training, and offering incentives to employees.
