KHULNA, June 2, 2026 (BSS) – Convener of Khulna District BNP Md. Moniruzzaman Montu today said that martyred President Ziaur Rahman always dreamed of building a self-reliant and green Bangladesh.

“He pioneered landmark canal excavation and afforestation programmes, which opened up new horizons for the country's agricultural sector. Planting a sapling in his memory means embracing his ideals of patriotism and environmental protection,” he said.

Montu made the remarks while addressing a tree plantation programme as the chief guest, organized by Khulna District Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal as part of its week-long activities marking the 45th martyrdom anniversary of BNP founder, freedom fighter and former President Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam.

A brief discussion meeting was held before the plantation programme at Government Rupsha College in Khulna on Tuesday morning.

The BNP leader said Ziaur Rahman had made an unforgettable contribution to the welfare of the Muslim Ummah by promoting the cultivation of neem trees not only in Bangladesh but also in Saudi Arabia.

He also referred to BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s plan to plant 250 million trees across the country over the next five years, describing it as a continuation of Ziaur Rahman’s vision of nationwide afforestation.

Calling upon Chhatra Dal leaders and activists to play an active role in creating a clean and green environment, Montu said the organization must remain united in efforts to build an environmentally sustainable Bangladesh.

The programme was chaired by Acting Convener of Khulna District Chhatra Dal Md. Abu Jafar and conducted by Member Secretary Khan Ismail Hossain.

Among others, Joint Conveners of the district unit of Chhatra Dal Md. Maksud Alam, Imtiaz Ali Sujan, Mahamudul Hasan and Sohan Mollah were present.
