
RAJSHAHI, June 3, 2026 (BSS) - The Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) today inaugurated its Tree Plantation-2026 programme as part of implementing the election pledge of the present government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to plant 25 crore trees in five years.
RCC Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman Riton inaugurated the citywide programme at noon by planting saplings on a footpath and road divider in front of North Bengal International University in the Chauddapai area of the city.
Under the programme, RCC has set a target of planting about 2.5 lakh saplings over the next year on road islands, footpaths and open spaces across the 30 wards of Rajshahi metropolis.
Of the total, plantation of around 53,000 saplings has already begun in the first phase. Various species of flowering, fruit-bearing, forest and medicinal trees will be planted to increase greenery, maintain ecological balance and enhance the city's beauty.
Under the programme, trees will be planted from Talaimari to Katakhali at the city corporation's outer boundary, from Amchattar to Nowhata Bridge, from Dashpukur intersection to Kashiadanga, from Court Dhalur intersection to Kathalbaria-Kashiadanga, and from Biman Chattar to Bihas.
Other areas to be brought under the programme include the roads from Bhadra to Nowdapara New Bus Terminal, Meherchandi Flyover to Daiar Park, Divisional Stadium to City Hat, Jail Gate to Police Lines, and BSCIC Match Factory to the Physical Education College, along with various designated locations in Wards 1 to 30.
Speaking to journalists after inaugurating the programme, Mahfuzur Rahman Riton said, “The programme has been formally launched today and will continue in phases. We want to make this initiative successful with the cooperation of city residents.”
Calling upon residents to plant more trees, he said, “Everyone should plant at least one tree and take proper care of it. Let us work together to build Rajshahi into a greener, cleaner, environmentally friendly and healthier city.”
He said RCC would ensure not only tree plantation but also proper maintenance of the saplings. Environmental workers of the city corporation will regularly water and care for the trees.
Among others, RCC Chief Executive Officer Md Rezaul Karim, Vice-Chancellor of North Bengal International University Professor Dr M Sayedur Rahman, Treasurer Professor Md Asnar Uddin, Registrar Dr Md Azibar Rahman, RCC Secretary Sohel Rana, Superintending Engineer Khairul Baker, and leaders of Motihar Thana BNP and Ward BNP were present.
