
LALMONIRHAT, July 9, 2026 (BSS)- A programme to sow more than 100,000 date palm seeds was launched in the district today to promote afforestation, combat environmental degradation and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
The initiative, organised by Sabuj Seba Jubo Biggan Sangha in collaboration with Sabuj Seba Foundation and YouthNet Global's Lalmonirhat District Team, will be implemented in phases across the district.
Seeds will be sown along roadsides, at educational institutions, on khas land and other suitable locations.
Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Md Rashedul Haque Pradhan inaugurated the programme.
Speakers at the event said large-scale afforestation is essential to address climate change, protect biodiversity and maintain ecological balance.
They noted that date palm trees help enrich the country's natural resources and biodiversity.
They also stressed that achieving a greener, safer and more liveable Bangladesh requires the combined efforts of the government, social organisations, youth and local communities.
Similar voluntary environmental initiatives should be expanded across the country, they added.
Lalmonirhat Zila Parishad Administrator A K M Mominul Haque, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md Russell Mia, Lalmonirhat Government College Principal Professor Abu Imam Md Rashedunnabi and District Department of Environment Assistant Director Bijon Kumar Roy attended the inauguration.
The programme concluded with guests and volunteers sowing date palm seeds.
