
DHAKA, March 8, 2026 (BSS)- Bangladesh today joined the global community in observing International Women's Day, reaffirming its commitment to advancing women's rights, empowerment and equal opportunities through policy initiatives, partnerships and collective efforts across sectors.
As part of the observance, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, MP, hosted an Iftar reception at a city Hotel in Dhaka, attended mainly by women including diplomats, politicians, government officials, civil
society leaders and distinguished guests from various sectors.
Barrister Zaima Rahman, daughter of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, also attended the event.
Speaking on the occasion, the state minister paid tribute to the contributions of Bangladeshi women, from the pioneers of the 1971 War of Liberation to the leaders, professionals, educators and entrepreneurs who continue to drive the nation's development.
She also remembered with respect "Mother of Democracy" and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia for her landmark initiatives in female education, and recalled the legacy of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman in expanding women's participation in the workforce and establishing the Women Affairs entity.

Highlighting initiatives of the present government under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the state minister outlined a number of programmes aimed at strengthening women's empowerment.
These include the Family and Farmers Card initiatives, support for women entrepreneurs, free education for girls up to postgraduate level, expanded healthcare facilities and measures to enhance women's participation in the formal economy.
She stressed the government's firm commitment to preventing violence against women and girls and strengthening mechanisms to respond to such challenges.
British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke and UN Women Country Representative Gitanjali Singh also addressed the gathering, underscoring the importance of global partnerships and collaborative efforts to advance women's rights and gender equality.
Participants also highlighted this year's International Women's Day theme -- "Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls"-- and emphasized the need to remove barriers to justice and equal opportunities for women and girls everywhere.
