CHATTOGRAM, April 29, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam today inspected waterlogged areas at Probortok intersection in Chattogram city and assured that necessary steps would be taken to prevent waterlogging during the upcoming monsoon season.

The minister made the remarks after visiting the affected areas this evening, accompanied by Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain.

Criticising exaggerated media reports on the situation, he said the temporary waterlogging at Probortok intersection occurred due to canal construction work. Although sudden heavy rainfall caused some water accumulation, it subsided within a short time.

Mir Shahe Alam said that out of many canals under the city corporation, 36 canals were handed over to the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) for renovation, reconstruction and ensuring proper water flow.

Due to a shortage of manpower, the CDA began implementing the project in 2016 through the Army's engineering corps, he added.

The minister said the authorities had planned to complete the work by May 15 and remove the retaining wall to restore the canal's normal flow. However, unexpected rainfall caused temporary waterlogging before the completion of the work.

Responding to a question from journalists, he said the demand for a city government is not new, noting that it has been raised for the last 15 to 30 years.

"The BNP government has been in power for only 70 days. We will study the matter and, if necessary, form technical and expert committees. If a city government proves beneficial for the people, the prime minister, being elected by the people, will take appropriate steps," he said.
