RAJSHAHI, Jan 29, 2026 (BSS) - Mohammad Jahangir, who is contesting for the Rajshahi-2 (Sadar) constituency in the upcoming Jatiya Sangsad (JS) with Jamaat-e-Islami ticket, is a physician by profession.
He has pledged to increase the number of beds at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH from 1,200 to 3,000.
Talking to BSS, Dr. Jahangir said the hospital is currently facing an acute bed shortage. Against a capacity of 1,200 beds, around 3,000 patients are admitted, forcing many to receive treatment on the floor.
“We have discussed the matter with the relevant authorities. Our plan is to increase the number of beds to 3,000 and raise the budget so that every patient can receive quality medicines and medical supplies,” he said.
He further stated that comprehensive facilities for cancer treatment, heart surgery, kidney transplantation, and complex liver treatment would be introduced in Rajshahi, so that people in the region would no longer need to travel to Dhaka or abroad for advanced medical care.
Calling for the immediate reopening of the long-closed Rajshahi Children’s Hospital, Dr. Jahangir said that although the building exists, the hospital has not been operational due to a shortage of manpower.
“We have said that if necessary, doctors of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will provide services there voluntarily,” he added.
At the same time, he pledged to establish a new district-level (Sadar) hospital on nine bighas of land adjacent to the Al-Amin Hostel in front of the Eidgah ground.
In the post 5 August period, Jamaat-e-Islami has become a symbol of public trust, said Dr Jahangir, adding that Jamaat is uncompromising on the issues of independence and sovereignty.
“Likewise, Jamaat and Islami Chhatra Shibir played a strong role in the anti-autocracy movement. Because of our strong role in recent movements, public interest has grown. Proof of this is that in the last five student union elections, Islami Chhatra Shibir panels won outright in several major universities,” he said.
“And as an individual, I have my own reputation. Even before being elected, I have established several institutions here, through which employment has been created. That is why people will vote for me,” he added.
In the past, Jamaat leaders were subjected to judicial killings. There were enforced disappearances and killings. People were kept in secret detention cells. People will not forget these contributions of ours.
For victory, he believes grassroots outreach is the most important. Engagement with people must be increased. Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir are very strong in Rajshahi city, and they are working comprehensively.
“We are giving greater importance to public outreach. We are receiving a very good response. We can see widespread public support everywhere. Ordinary people are expressing enthusiasm. They are showing interest in voting for the “scales” symbol. From people’s body language, it is clear that they are very eager to vote for the scales,” he added.
Replying to a question Dr Jahangir said: “I am one hundred percent hopeful. I am very confident. I am optimistic about victory. This time people will cast their votes in favor of justice”.
Talking about BNP heavyweight candidate Mizanur Rahman Minu, he said there is no doubt that brother Minu is an experienced politician. But in the past, when he was elected, Jamaat also played a significant role.
“We were in an alliance. We worked to make him victorious. This time there is no alliance. Now it will be seen whom the people accept,” he added.
Dr. Jahangir Alam emphasized the party’s commitment to promoting good governance, justice, and eradicating corruption. He said, “There is no alternative to Jamaat-e-Islami to build a society free of corruption and ensure the rights of the people.”
He further pledged that, if elected, he would focus on improving education, healthcare, employment opportunities, and civic services in the constituency. The campaign event was attended by leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and allied organizations.
