SANGSAD BHABAN, June 24, 2026 (BSS) – Lawmakers today said the budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 (FY27) has been announced to implement the welfare plans of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, aiming to develop the nation.

The proposed budget has been formulated to implement the Prime Minister’s development plans to build a prosperous nation, they said while taking part in the general discussion on the national budget for FY27 in the Jatiya Sangsad.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on June 11 unveiled a Taka 9.38 trillion national budget for FY27 setting the GDP growth target at 6.5 percent, aiming to rebound from the provisional 4.14 percent growth recorded in the outgoing fiscal year.

“The proposed budget has earmarked significant allocations for education and health sectors, aiming to get significant output through developing the nation in line with the plan designed by the Prime Minister,” said BNP lawmaker Mohamed Koysor Ahmed from Sunamganj-3.

In FY26, the education and health sectors’ allocation were Taka 95,644 crore and Taka 41,908 crore which were respectively 1.53 percent and 0.67 percent of the GDP.

On the other hand, the budgetary allocation for the education is Taka 1,36,606 crore and Taka 69,409 crore for the health and family welfare sector, which is 2 percent and 1.02 percent of the GDP, he told the parliament.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has got double allocation compared to previous revised budget allocation. This historic 1% of GDP threshold is aimed at expanding healthcare services, with promising duty cuts on medical equipment and raw pharmaceutical materials, he added.

The government in the proposed budget has given priority to the education and health sectors with a goal to develop the human resources and also to face the global challenges, said BNP lawmaker Mostafizur Rahman Bhuiyan from Narayanganj-1.

Citing a recent report by the World Bank, opposition Bangladesh Jamaat e Islami lawmaker Marzia Begum (Women seat-38) said around 44 percent families of the country are facing crisis due to excessive expenditure while every year 20-30 percent health sector allocation remained unused in the country.

Weakness of management, lack of required physicians and equipment in the government hospitals are hampering the quality health services in the country, she added.

About the health sector budget, opposition lawmaker Quamrul Hasan from Mymensingh-6 said the government should implement the budget properly as every year around 5-8 lakh people go abroad for medical treatment with a cost of Taka 55,000 crore, which is equivalent to the health sector budget allocation.

The implementation of the budget will help to realize all the pledges made by the government, said BNP lawmaker Kazi Rafiqul Islam from Bogura-1.

Regarding the budget formulation, another opposition lawmaker Muhammad Nazibur Rahman from Pabna-1 said the lawmakers of the country have no participation in the budget formulation while the lawmakers of the democratic country like United Kingdom have closely related with the budget formulation process.

To make the budget truly people welfare oriented, the lawmaker, however, stressed on increasing accountability, reducing corruption, strengthening the role of parliament and taking bold steps to curb discrimination between the rich and the poor.
Taking part in the budget discussion, another opposition lawmaker Izzatullah from Satkhira-1 said the foreign debt has now stood at Taka 30,00,000 crore and the government would have to pay Taka 1,27,000 crore as interest of the foreign loan.
