Five to walk gallows in transport worker leader Basu murder case

DHAKA, Jan 28, 2026 (BSS) - A special court here today convicted and sentenced five people to death and four others to imprisonment till natural death in a case filed over the murder of former president of Gopalganj District Transport Workers Union Saidur Rahman Sheikh Basu.
 
Judge Md Rohibul Islam of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict, sentencing Bulbul Sheikh, Hedayet Sheikh, Tafsir Sheikh, Jhontu Sheikh and Kibria Kazi to death. Tafsir Sheikh and Kibria Kazi were tried in absentia.
 
The court also sentenced Mintu Sheikh, Kenai Mollah, Alimuzzaman Bitu and Prince Kha to imprisonment till natural death. Of them, Bitu is still absconding.
 
Besides, the tribunal handed down life imprisonment to 11 others - Ikbal Kha, Tutul Sheikh, Roni Sheikh, Akram Ali, Habil Kazi, Bulgan Kazi, Sajib Sheikh, Ponir Sheikh, Shihab Sheikh, Rashed Sheikh and Shawkat Sheikh.
 
According to the case records, Basu was killed in the first week of February 2016. His younger brother Jasu Sheikh filed the case with Gopalganj Sadar Police Station on February 19, 2016. Police submitted the charge-sheet against 23 accused on July 12, 2016.
 
The Gopalganj Sessions Judge's Court framed charges on August 29, 2017, and later transferred the case to the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 on August 16, 2018, for speedy disposal.
