Legal Aid extends assistance to a large number of inmates

DHAKA, March 29, 2026 (BSS)  -  A significant number of inmates have received legal assistance through the National Legal Aid Services Organization (Legal Aid).

The information was revealed in a report published on the organization’s website.

According to the report, from 2009 to February 2026, 30,395 people received legal assistance through the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office at government expense. Legal Aid offices in 64 districts across the country provided assistance to 1,158,630 people, while 30,009 people were served through the Dhaka and Chattogram Labour Legal Aid Cells.

In addition, 199,806 people received services through the national legal aid helpline call centre (toll-free number 16699).

In total, 1,418,840 beneficiaries have received legal assistance at government expense through Legal Aid.

The programme is being implemented under the Legal Aid Services Act to provide free legal assistance to financially insolvent and helpless justice seekers.

The National Legal Aid Services Organization operates under the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
