DHAKA, June 2, 2025 (BSS) - Adviser to the ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain said that the government has taken the country's first monorail project in the port city of Chattogram to ease the city's growing traffic congestion.

In a post on his verified Facebook page, the adviser confirmed that the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has taken the initiative to implement the monorail project, which aims to significantly reduce traffic pressure in the metropolitan area.

The project is a joint venture between Germany-based Orascom Construction and Egypt's Arab Contractors Group, two globally renowned engineering and construction firms.

Earlier, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the companies and CCC at the World Trade Center in Chattogram.

Under the agreement, both firms will carry out a feasibility study for the proposed project.

The total investment is estimated between Tk 20,000 to 25,000 crore, with financing support to be coordinated among Bangladesh, Germany and Egypt.

Once completed, the monorail network will cover 54 kilometers across three major routes and will feature 32 to 33 stations. It is expected that the entire city could be traversed within 30 to 40 minutes, transforming daily commuting for city dwellers.
