DHAKA, April 11, 2026 (BSS)– Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today said the government will not allow any division among citizens based on religion, race, or gender and is committed to ensuring equal rights for all.
Swapon said, “There is no scope to judge anyone as superior or inferior on the basis of religious or ethnic identity. The government is committed to protecting and ensuring equal fundamental rights for all citizens,” he added.
He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a reception held at Mother Teresa Bhaban on the Holy Rosary Church campus in Tejgaon this afternoon.
Gournadi Christian Co-operative Credit Union Limited organized the reception on behalf of the Christian community from Gournadi and Agailjhara upazilas.
The minister said those who attempted to dominate the state or society in the name of religion, do not uphold democratic practices. “Wherever governance has been established in the name of religion, democracy has been hindered,” he added.
“Religion belongs to individuals but the state belongs to all. The BNP-led government aims to build a non-discriminatory and democratic society without any religious division within,” he said.
Highlighting communal harmony in his constituency, he said people of Hindu, Muslim, and Christian communities in Gournadi and Agailjhara have long been coexisting peacefully.
Speakers at the event expressed gratitude to the minister, saying Christians in Agailjhara have not faced persecution under his leadership.
They also demanded a government holiday on Easter Sunday and sought his intervention in resolving local issues.
Reception event convener Silvaster Sarkar chaired the event while Tejgaon Christian Association President Swapan Halder, organizer Francis Dhaki, former student leader Mohiuddin Badsha, and Agailjhara upazila JCD joint convener Ascent Roy, among others spoke on the occasion.
