The 3.1-kilometre Dharar canal was originally excavated on September 6, 1979, under the initiative of former President Ziaur Rahman. Over time, the canal gradually became nearly extinct.

As part of the government’s nationwide canal restoration programme, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, son of former President Ziaur Rahman, inaugurated the re-excavation work of the canal.

After inaugurating the re-excavation work and planting the tree, the Prime Minister addressed local residents from a stage set up next to the canal.

Party leaders and activists welcomed him with loud applause, while local women, marginal farmers, and children also gathered enthusiastically to greet the Prime Minister.
