Dhaka, March 28, 2025 (BSS) - In a resolute move to combat air pollution, the Department of
Environment (DoE) has shut down 12 illegal lead battery factories operating in Konapara,
Jatrabari, and Aminbazar, Savar.

These factories were engaged in unauthorized battery dismantling and smelting, posing severe
health and environmental hazards, said a press release here today.

A joint operation conducted by the DoE and Jatrabari police in the early hours of Friday resulted
in the closure of six factories in Konapara, including the sealing of two facilities. These
operations uncovered illicit lead smelting activities that were releasing toxic fumes, endangering
local residents who had been suffering from respiratory illnesses and other health complications
due to prolonged exposure.

The operation was supported by local volunteers and community members, who played a crucial
role in identifying the locations of these illegal facilities.

In a separate enforcement drive in Aminbazar, Savar, six illegal lead smelting furnaces were
demolished. This action was carried out with the cooperation of police and the Rapid Action
Battalion (RAB).

The affected communities and complainants expressed satisfaction with the DoE’s intervention,
welcoming the firm stance taken against these hazardous operations.

During the operation, the DoE also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any similar
illegal establishments, emphasizing the importance of collective action in preventing
environmental pollution.
