TANGAIL, March 29, 2025 (BSS) - A total of Taka 3,38,52,900 were collected as toll at the Jamuna bridge in the last 24 hours till last midnight, official sources said here today.

"A total of 48,355 different sorts of vehicles crossed the Bridge in the last 24 hours till 12 midnight on Friday, sources added.

Thousands of home-bound people of North Bengal were going to their near and dear ones to share the joys of Eid through the bridge. The pressure of vehicles and home-bound passengers was also high on the bridge as like as the previous years, but there was no congestion on the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge Highway.

The BSS correspondent while visiting Alenga bus station, Rabna bypass and Ashekpur bypass saw huge people were waiting for transports to reach their homes. They were trying to get into buses, trucks, pickups and Leguna to go to their destination. Besides, there were huge number of private cars and motorcycles on the roads.

Md Ruhul Amin, a north Bengal bound passenger alleged that he had to pay extra fare to come to Alenga from Dhaka, but there was no traffic congestion. Many people were boarding trucks and pickups to go to his destination due to lake of public transports on the roads. Md Riday, a Bogura bound passenger also echoed with Ruhul Amin.

Engineer Ahsanul Kabir told journalist that the bridge authority has set up 18 toll booths on both sides of the bridge for passing the vehicles, except motorbikes to remove traffic congestion on the highway. They also set up four separate booths for passing motorcycles and a total of 9,163 motorbikes passed through the bridge at that time, he added.

Mizanur Rahman, Superintendent of Police (SP) Tangail, told BSS that some 750 police personnel including mobile team and motorcycle team have been engaged on the Dhaka-Tangail highway to reduce traffic congestion.

They have been working on the roads round-the-clock defying high temperature in the day time, the SP added.
