Shipping Adviser extends financial assistance to families of ship accident victims

DHAKA, May 20, 2025 (BSS) – Adviser to the ministries of Shipping and Labour and Employment Brig Gen (retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hussain today extended financial support totaling Tk 1.20 crore to the families of those who lost their lives in ship accidents.

During the distribution event at BSC Tower, he handed over cheques to the bereaved families of four, who tragically lost their lives in accidents aboard of MT Banglar Jyoti and MT Banglar Saurabh. 

Each of the families of deceased cadets and sailors received Tk 30 lakh 

Expressing deep condolences, the adviser prayed for the eternal peace of the deceased cadets and sailors, reaffirming his commitment to aiding those impacted by such tragedies.

He mentioned the government's unwavering support for the affected families, highlighting BSC's role in aiding their employment and education. By extending financial assistance, BSC has set a commendable example for the maritime community, he said.

Describing BSC as a vital and profitable government entity, Sakhawat noted its significant contribution to the national development through international-standard shipping services and advancements in the maritime sector.

There are plans to purchase two LNG ships to make its activities more extensive and profitable, he added.

On September 30, 2024, a tragic fire incident occurred aboard Bangladesh Shipping Corporation’s MT Banglar Jyoti at Dolphin Jetty, claiming the lives of Deck Cadet Saurabh Kumar Saha, highly skilled auto-mechanic Md. Nurul Islam, and daily based fitter Harun-or- Rashid.

Additionally, on October 5 last, Md. Sadiq Mia suffered injuries in a fire accident on MT Banglar Saurabh. 

Despite receiving medical treatment, he later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

After the incidents, BSC promptly provided financial assistance of Tk 50,000 to each bereaved family and extended support for the funeral arrangements.

With BSC Managing Director Commodore Mahmudul Malek in the chair, Senior Secretary of Shipping Ministry Mohammed Yousuf attended the event as a special guest.
