BNP takes 8-day programme to mark Ziaur Rahman's martyrdom anniversary

DHAKA, May 20, 2025 (BSS) - The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced an eight-day programme from May 26 to June 2 to mark the 44th martyrdom anniversary of its founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.

BNP's Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed announced the programme at a press conference after a joint meeting of the party and its front organizations held at party chairperson's Gulshan office here in the afternoon.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who is now in Bangkok for eye treatment, virtually presided over the meeting.

On May 30, at 10:30 am, there will be a discussion meeting, distribution of rice, pulses and clothes among the needy, along with various programmes.

On the occasion of the martyrdom anniversary, the party flag will be hoisted half-mast at the party's central office in Naya Paltan, the Chairperson's office in Gulshan, and the party offices across the country. BNP and its affiliated organizations will publish posters about Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and the party will take measures to publish special supplements in various national dailies.

Other programmes include a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium in Ramna at 3:00 pm on May 29, rich tribute will be paid to the grave of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at 10:30 am on May 30, and mass prayers will be organized in mosques and also in places of worships of other religious communities across the country.

Food and clothes will be distributed among the needy people in various areas under the initiative of Dhaka Metropolitan North-South units of the party.

In addition to the central programmes, district and upazila-thana-municipal units across the country will also hold various programmes in memory of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, including discussion meetings, distribution of food and clothes among the needy people.

After the change over on August 15, 1975, Major General Ziaur Rahman became the chief of Bangladesh Army.

Ziaur Rahman became Chief Martial Law Administrator on November 19, 1976 when Justice Sayem relinquished the position, and ultimately the President of Bangladesh on April 21, 1977 when President Sayem resigned.

In 1978, he was formally elected in a presidential election, becoming the first directly elected president of Bangladesh.
On May 30, 1981, President Ziaur Rahman was assassinated by a group of disgruntled army personnel at the Chittagong Circuit House. Since then BNP observes the day as 'Martyrdom Day of Ziaur Rahman'.

BNP Joint Secretaries General Khairul Kabir Khokon, Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie and Abdus Salam Azad, Publicity Secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku and leaders of various associate organizations were present at the joint meeting.
