HAVANA, May 31, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - Cuba's foreign ministry said Friday it had summoned the US envoy to Havana to protest his "interference" in the country's internal affairs.

Since arriving in the job in November, Mike Hammer has been crisscrossing the communist island, meeting with dissidents and posting pictures of the encounters on social media.

In a statement, the foreign ministry said it had summoned Hammer to "once again draw his attention to his behavior, marked by interference and hostility."

Hammer was given "a verbal note of protest" and warned "he cannot use the immunity he enjoys as his country's representative as a cover for acts contrary to the sovereignty and internal order" of Cuba.

Havana accused the diplomat of "encouraging Cuban citizens to... act in support of the interests and objectives of a hostile foreign power."

The United States has a six-decade-old trade blockade in place against Cuba, and President Donald Trump has increased pressure on the island since returning to office.

He has notably reinstated Cuba on a blacklist of state sponsors of "terrorism."
