DHAKA, May 31, 2025 (BSS) - World No Tobacco Day-2025 is being observed across the country today, as elsewhere in the world aiming to raise awareness about the consequences of tobacco consumption and encouraging people to quit smoking.

This year's theme in Bangladesh highlights the deceptive strategies used by tobacco companies and advocates for a tobacco and nicotine-free nation, according to a press release from the National Tobacco Control Cell under the Health Service Division of the Ministry of Health.

On this day, government bodies, non-government organizations and individuals come together to advocate for stronger tobacco control measures, such as higher taxes on tobacco products, smoke-free public spaces and bans on tobacco advertising.

The Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Act, 2005, is the principal law governing tobacco control in Bangladesh.

It includes provisions for designated smoke-free areas, restrictions on tobacco advertising and promotion, prohibitions on the sale of tobacco to and by minors and strict guidelines on tobacco packaging and labeling.
