BRAHMANBARIA, June 2, 2025 (BSS) - The water level of the Howrah River in Akhaura upazila of Brahmanbaria district has risen due to runoff from the hilly slopes upstream in India and continuous rainfall.
The Water Development Board said the river's water level has increased by 94 centimeters in the last 24 hours.
Since Sunday night, several villages in three unions of Akhaura upazila have been flooded. A total of 18 villages are inundated, affecting nearly 400 families.
Besides, the dam at the Kornel Bazar section of the Howrah River is at risk of erosion. Since Sunday morning, runoff from the hilly slopes has started entering villages bordering India in Akhaura North, Mogra, and Maniyand unions.
About 18 villages including Kalikapur, Bangerchar, Itna, Bautala, Kendua, and Abdullahpur along the border have been flooded.
Akhaura Upazila Nirbahi Officer G. M. Rashedul Islam said 11 shelter centers have been opened for the flood-affected people. Dry food has already been distributed among the victims, and more relief aid is being prepared.
