Jahangirnagar University, Oct 26, 2025 (BSS) - Jahangirnagar University (JU) has named the road from the main gate to the Shaheed Minar as the "Afsana Karim Rachi Memorial Road" in memory of late student Afsana Karim Rachi.
Rachi, a 53rd batch (2023-24) Marketing Department student, tragically lost her life last year in a rickshaw accident on campus.
JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan unveiled the road nameplate today. Earlier, a special prayer was offered for Rachi, followed by a brief discussion.
Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Dr Ahsan said, "Rachi's family has set an extraordinary example of humanity by rejecting all compensation offers from the university. Their sole request was to ensure no more lives are lost in such accidents. This remarkable gesture shows the unparalleled courage and wisdom of Rachi's parents."
He also expressed gratitude to the family for supporting the university's plan to allow autorickshaws on campus under strict regulations to ensure student safety. "Their cooperation has been invaluable in making the campus safer for everyone," he added.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Sohel Ahmed, deans of different faculties, University Proctor, Rachi's parents, JUCSU Vice-President Abdur Rashid Zitu, General Secretary Mazharul Islam, Transport and Communication Secretary Tanvir Rahman, along with other JUCSU leaders, faculty members, students, and members of Rachi's family attended the occasion.
