KHULNA, Oct 28, 2025 (BSS) - Students of Khulna University (KU) on Monday observed International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week through a colorful rally and human chain to raise awareness about the dangers of lead contamination.

Held under the slogan "No level of lead exposure is safe: Act now to stop lead pollution," the program was organized by Youth Net Global in collaboration with UNICEF Bangladesh and supported by Pure Earth Bangladesh.

The rally began at Hadi Chattar, passing through Aparajita and Bijoy '24 Halls before ending at the Khulna University School premises. Md. Habibullah Mugdha, District Coordinator of Youth Net Global, Khulna, presided over the event.

Among others, Swarnakamal Roy, Head Teacher of Khulna University School, Mojahidul Islam, Assistant Teacher and Alkama Romin, President of the KU Journalists' Association, attended the event.

Speakers highlighted the urgent need to combat lead pollution, warning that rapid urbanization and industrialization are increasing lead contamination in air, water, soil, food, toys, paints, and cookware. They stressed that lead exposure severely damages children's neurological and physical development, posing a serious risk to future generations.

They urged authorities to close illegal lead battery recycling plants and strengthen monitoring of food-producing industries to prevent contamination. The speakers also called for enhanced public awareness, stricter law enforcement, and the adoption of eco-friendly industrial practices to build a lead-free Bangladesh.

The human chain concluded at Khulna Zero Point.
