LAKSHMIPUR, April 24, 2026 (BSS) - Water Resources Minister Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee today said that the upcoming local government elections will be highly challenging in the absence of party symbols.
He stressed the need to ensure that honest, capable and pro-people representatives are elected, adding that vigilance from now on is essential in selecting suitable candidates for public office.
The minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony of an annual sports competition held on the grounds of Haji Fateh Mohammadia Dakhil Madrasa in Dighli Union under Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila this afternoon.
He said anyone intending to contest elections must be a good, people-oriented individual and remain committed to serving the public.
Referring to past experiences, he noted that the absence of elected representatives at the grassroots level over the last 17 years had created various challenges in local governance.
The minister also cautioned party leaders and activists, saying that if multiple candidates are fielded from the same party in local government elections, it could weaken electoral prospects.
He said such a situation would not be beneficial for the party.
He further said that Union Parishad elections could be announced at any time and emphasized that good representatives contribute to a better society, while self-serving leadership creates difficulties for the people.
He urged all concerned to remain alert and responsible in this regard.
The programme was presided over by Golam Sarwar, President of Haji Fateh Mohammadia Dakhil Madrasa.
Vice President of Bangladesh Football Federation Wahid Uddin Chowdhury Happy, Assistant Private Secretary to Water Resources Minister Jamshed Alam Rana, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kathowai Pru Marma and BNP Joint Convener of Lakshmipur district Advocate Hafiz Ullah were present, among others.
