DHAKA, May 22, 2026 (BSS) - Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today called upon the current generation to transform the spirit of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam into a holistic national ideal, stressing their responsibility to pass this legacy down to future generations.

The Minister said Nazrul's poetry profoundly inspires patriotism, humanitarianism, a love for nature and a willingness to make self-sacrifices.

Minister Swapon made these remarks as the chief guest at a ceremony celebrating the 127th birth anniversary of the National Poet, held at the Jatiya Natyashala auditorium of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

He said introducing children to Nazrul's poems at an early age builds a strong foundation for patriotism, empathy and dedication to the country.

The Minister also marveled at the poet's extraordinary creative output, calling it a rare feat in world history given that Nazrul's active creative career lasted only about 21 to 22 years before illness silenced him.

"The immense body of work he left behind including poetry, literature, drama and music remains deeply relevant today," Swapon said.

"Nazrul's literature and philosophy do not just influence individuals, they shape the holistic spirit of the entire nation."

He further observed that the spirit of Nazrul has been a driving force behind every major milestone in the country's history. From the Language Movement and the Liberation War to July Uprising, Nazrul's legacy continues to inspire people to stand up against injustice.

The Minister remarked that while not everyone needs to be a Nazrul researcher, the nation would be immensely enriched if its citizens simply allowed themselves to be inspired by the poet's enduring spirit.

The event was chaired by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Director General (DG) Sheikh Rezauddin Ahmed, with Ambassador Mushfiqul Fazal Ansary attending as a special guest. Poet and writer Hasan Hafiz presented the keynote address and prominent Nazrul researcher Dr. Engineer Khalequzzaman also spoke at the gathering.
