BAGERHAT, May 22, 2026 (BSS) - A devastating late-night fire completely destroyed a cowshed in Sonapura village under Mollahat upazila, killing four cows and causing damage estimated at Tk 8 to 10 lakh.

The incident, which occurred around 1:00am on Thursday night, also left a calf injured. Fortunately, a bull managed to escape after breaking its tether.

According to local sources and the affected family, the fire broke out suddenly and spread rapidly throughout the structure. Noticing the flames, nearby residents rushed to the spot and attempted to bring the blaze under control. However, due to the intensity of the fire, the four cows trapped inside were burnt to death before they could be rescued.

The owner of the cattle, Ayub Ali Tarafdar, said that the fire caused massive financial losses, destroying the cowshed, livestock and other stored valuables.

"There was jute wood stored on the eaves of the shed. I suspect someone may have intentionally set it on fire out of past enmity," Tarafdar said.

While the exact cause of the fire has not yet been officially confirmed, the incident has sparked widespread concern and panic among local cattle farmers. Local residents have called for a proper investigation into the matter and have urged the government to provide immediate financial assistance to the affected family.
