DHAKA, May 22, 2026 (BSS) - Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has adopted a comprehensive security plan, including deployment of additional police personnel, installation of CCTV cameras, police camps, watch towers and fake currency detection machines, to ensure safety and security at cattle markets across the capital ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
As part of the measures, traffic police personnel will also be deployed to ensure smooth movement of buyers, sellers, visitors and cattle-carrying vehicles around the markets.
DMP Spokesperson and Deputy Commissioner NM Nasiruddin disclosed the security arrangements while talking to BSS today.
He said adequate numbers of police personnel, both in uniform and plainclothes, will remain deployed in and around all cattle markets in the capital.
In addition, patrol teams equipped with cars and motorcycles will conduct round-the-clock monitoring to ensure the safe movement of cattle traders and buyers to and from the markets.
"All cattle markets will be brought under CCTV surveillance alongside installation of police camps and watch towers to strengthen security," he said.
Nasiruddin said police check posts will be reinforced at key points across the capital, including major entry and exit routes.
The checkpoints will remain operational round-the-clock, while mobile patrol teams will continue monitoring important areas across the city 24 hours a day, he added.
The DMP spokesperson said adequate numbers of fake currency detection machines will also be installed at cattle markets as counterfeit notes are frequently circulated during Eid-ul-Azha trading.
"We will provide 150 fake currency detection machines on behalf of the DMP," he said, adding that city corporations, leaseholders and banks have also been requested to arrange additional machines.
He said special drives against counterfeit currency syndicates began on May 1, during which several people were arrested in separate raids conducted in different parts of the capital with fake notes and equipment used for producing counterfeit currency.
Additionally, the DMP has planned to provide money escort services, as in previous years, to ensure the safe transportation of large sums of cash by traders and individuals.
Nasiruddin said police personnel have been placed on high alert to prevent mugging, snatching and extortion incidents, which usually increase ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
He said more than 1,900 criminals, including muggers, drug traders and extortionists, have been arrested since the special drive began on May 1.
Of them, around 200 are listed extortionists, while another 400 are unlisted extortionists, he added.
The DMP spokesperson said drives against extortionists and snatchers will continue throughout the Eid period, warning that no one involved in extortion would be spared.
He also said additional police personnel, including women police members, will be deployed at major shopping malls and commercial centres ahead of Eid to ensure public safety.
Besides, police patrol teams and regular forces will remain vigilant to prevent mugging, theft and burglary in residential areas, as many city residents leave Dhaka to celebrate Eid with their families in villages and hometowns.
A total of 27 cattle markets - 11 under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and 16 under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) - will be set up in the capital ahead of Eid-ul-Azha this year.
Officials said the permanent Sarulia cattle market will remain closed this year as the area has been acquired by the Water Development Board.
Cattle trading at temporary markets will continue for five days, including Eid day.
City corporation officials said special measures will also be taken to manage traffic, waste disposal, public health, water supply and overall security at the temporary cattle markets.
