3 get death penalty, 5 life term in triple murder case in Munshiganj

DHAKA, May 8, 2025 (BSS) - A Speedy Trial Tribunal here today awarded death penalty to three accused and life term imprisonment to five others in a triple murder case in Munshiganj.

Judge of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 Masud Karim pronounced the judgment of the sensational triple murder case convicting eight accused and acquitting 10 others from the charges.

The death penalty awarded convicts are Rakibul Hassan Saurav, Shihab Prodhan and Rony Bepari while the life term imprisoned accused are-Shakib Prodhan, Shamim Prodhan, Anik Bepari, Jahangir Hossain alias Chhoto Jahangir and Raihan.

The judge also fined Taka one lakh to each of the life term convicts, Public Prosecutor of the tribunal Billal Hossain said.

The prosecution story in brief was that a bloody clash between the two groups of teenaged youths was erupted at a reconciliation meeting over an eve teasing to a class nine girl student at Uttar Islampur area in Munshiganj town at 11pm on March 24 in 2021.

A group of youths led by Saurav stabbed to death Imon Hossain, 22, the leader of the rival group on the spot during the meeting. Another youth Sakib Hossain, 19, who received critical stab injuries during the clash, succumbed to his injuries on way to hospital.

Critically injured three others were brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where Awlad Hossain Mintu 47, succumbed to his injuries a day after the incident.

Later, Khadiza Akhter, wife of Mintu, filed a murder case with Munshiganj Sadar Thana on March 26, 2021 and police on June 8 in 2022 submitted charge sheet against 18 people including Saurav.

On August 25 in 2024, the case was shifted to the Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 of Dhaka for trial following an instruction from the home ministry.  The tribunal on September 17 in the same year, framed charges against the charge sheeted accused. The court recorded depositions of a total of 28 prosecution witnesses during the trial.
